Food Storage

Getting Started - Fruits

Step Two: Determine how much fruit to store.

Here is a simplified chart for determining your family's fruit storage based on the USDA minimum daily recommendation:

Family Member Daily Recommendation1 Year Food Supply
Child age 1-8 1 cup equivalent 365 cup equivalents
Female age 9+ 1.5 cups equivalent 548 cup equivalents
Male age 9-13 1.5 cups equivalent 548 cup equivalents
Male age 14+ 2 cups equivalent 730 cup equivalents

According to the gender and age of your family members add your family's total minimum one year supply of fruit in cup equivalents.

What is a cup equivalent?   In general, 1 cup of fruit or 100% fruit juice, or 1/2 cup of dried fruit can be considered as 1 cup from the fruit group. Please note that a cup equivalent is not always equal to the serving size on a food package label. The food package label is often less (usually 1/2 cup.)

Step Three: Determine how much of each fruit to store.   --->
