Food Storage
Getting Started - Milk
Step Three: Determine how much of each milk to store.
So now that you know how much milk to store, you need to decide on how much of each to store.
Here are some tips to help you:
- Evaluate your ability to tolerate dry milk. If you grew up on fresh milk, dry milk probably won't taste the same. Taste test some dry milk products before buying in bulk. If you are lactose intolerant, Morning Moo is a great alternative, whey-based product.

- If you have small children, start them on dry milk early. As they grow up they won't know milk to be any different. You may also mix half fresh whole milk with half dry milk to enhance the flavor and add fat for developing children.

- If you don't like the flavor of dry milk, store chocolate syrup or dry chocolate drink mix such as Nestles Quik. This might help improve the taste of dry milk and make it more tolerable for your family.

- You can use dry milk to make hot chocolate mix. You can use this in your own family or give it away as gifts at Christmas time to help rotate your supply. dry milk can also be used in baking.

- It is possible to freeze cheese. The best cheeses to freeze are brick, camembert, cheddar, edam, mozzarella, muenster, parmesan, provolone, romano, and swiss. Plan to use frozen cheese within 2-3 months. Thaw cheese in the refrigerator and use soon after thawing. Frozen cheese is best used in cooking.

- Evaporated skim milk can be subsititued for recipes that call for milk.

- Powdered cheddar cheese is useful for making macaroni and cheese.
